The impact numbers can have on a population’s perception of value manifests in the Thesis Countdown. I originally thought it would be somewhat comical and interesting, yet also ultimately motivating to both myself and my peers, to post an online ticker displaying the time remaining until our thesis completion deadline, broken down into days, hours, minutes, and seconds. The reaction I received was quite surprising. Some reacted with the expected laughter, while a surprising number of people seemed generally resentful of my having shone a spotlight on the already stressful knowledge of the impending deadline.
